AHSAA State Basketball Championships

Linden 58, Decatur Heritage 44
Linden High School sophomore Amber Richardson scored 28 points and cleared 14 rebounds to lead the Patriots (19-6) to a 58-44 win over Decatur Heritage Monday morning at the BJCC Legacy Arena as the 94th annual AHSAA State Basketball Tournament got underway.
    South Regional champion Linden, coached by Teressa Bolden, advanced to the Class 1A girls’ state finals with the victory. The 1A girls’ championship game will be at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
    Class 1A opened the tournament Monday. Class 2A teams will play in the second session Monday. Classes 3A and 4A play Tuesday, Classes 6A and 5A, Wednesday, and Class 7A semifinals will be Thursday. All semifinal games are being live-streamed by the NFHS Network and broadcast by the AHSAA Radio Network. Details are at
    Richardson was 12-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 at the foul line en route to her impressive effort. Teammate Imiya Agee, a junior, added 18 points.
    Decatur Heritage (23-7), the Northwest Regional champs, sank 8-of-36  3-point goals but managed only 10 other field goals in the contest.  Junior Kaitlyn Cheatham was 6-of-16 from the 3-point arc to finished with 18 points to lead the Eagles of Coach Paula Armstrong.  Chandler Sparkman added 12 points and nine rebounds.
