BIRMINGHAM – Hazel Green (34-2) used a smothering defense Wednesday morning to post a 65-35 victory over LeFlore (33-3) in the semifinals of the AHSAA Class 6A Girls’ State Basketball tournament at the BJCC Legacy Arena. The win sends the Trojans into Saturday’s 6A girls’ championship game. Hazel Green, coached by Tim Miller, outscored the Rattlers 28-7 in the second quarter to build a 37-15 lead by halftime. The Rattlers, coached by Darrell Walton, could never recover. Brooke Hampel led the Trojans with 21 points, five rebounds and two steals. She was 9-of-10 at the foul line. Imari Martin chipped in 14 points and Caitlin Hose had 11. Daisha Bradford led LeFlore with 13 points and Sidney Stephens scored 10. Bradford and Deja Woodward also had eight rebounds each. Woodward also had four blocked shots. The Class 6A boys’ and girls’ semifinals continued Wednesday with Classes 3A and 4A scheduled to play semifinals Tuesday, Classes 6A and 5A, Wednesday, and Class 7A semifinals will be Thursday morning. All semifinal games in the tourney are being live video-streamed by the NFHS Network and broadcast over the AHSAA Radio Network. Both may be accessed at www.ahsaa.com .
