Stanhope Elmore at Opelika Class 6A Clash is AHSAA/NFHS Network Game of the Week

MONTGOMERY – The NFHS Network’s subscriber-based AHSAA School Broadcast Program has 59 events currently scheduled for October 18 through October 25 to be video live-streamed over its on-line platform. Football accounts for 52 of those events however, as the AHSAA volleyball regular season closes out this weekend.
Forty-two varsity football games are scheduled, including two tonight. Stanhope Elmore (5-3) travels to Opelika (3-4) Friday night for this week’s AHSAA/NFHS Network Game of the Week, highlighting a slate of 37 games set for video live-stream over the NFHS Network. OHS’s Becky Brown is the producer.
Coach Brian Bradford’s Mustangs are 4-0 in Class 6A, Region 3 with region wins over Benjamin Russell, Calera, Selma and Wetumpka. The 34-28 win over Wetumpka was the only setback the Indians (7-1) have had all season and assured Stanhope of at least a tie for the region title.  A win over the Bulldogs would clinch the top seed out-right, the Mustangs’ first region title  since winning back-to-back region crowns in 2003 and 2004 in Class 5A. Bradford is in his second season as head coach for the Mustangs, which own a 392-203-5 record overall in 54 seasons – a winning percentage of 65.9%, which ranks the Millbrook school 18th all-time among active AHSAA member schools. The three losses this season have come at the hands of Class 7A Prattville (19-16), 7A Smiths Station (14-9) and Class 6A Shades Valley (35-28).
Opelika Coach Erik Speakman, in his first season as head coach, has navigated the Bulldogs through one of the most difficult schedules in the state – and still sits at 3-1 in region play with a chance to create a tie with the Mustangs and possibly a three-way with Wetumpka and Stanhope with a win Friday night and a Wetumpka win over Selma.
The Bulldogs’ four losses have come to teams that have a combined 29-2 record on the season. Georgia juggernaut Callaway (7-1) beat Opelika 35-21 in the season opener and Class 7A powers Auburn (7-0) and Central-Phenix City (8-0) defeated the Bulldogs 22-15 and 28-0. Wetumpka (7-1) scored late to nip the Bulldogs 30-28 in their only region loss.
Opelika has a rich football history that goes back 101 years to 1917. The Bulldogs own a 565-394-18 overall record, which ranks 34th in the AHSAA all-time and seventh among 6A schools. The Bulldogs and Mustangs have met only twice in school history with each winning one game.
The football slate Friday includes at least one contest in each of the AHSAA’s seven classes including Victory Christian at Donoho in Class 1A, three games in Class 2A, three in Class 3A, four in Class 4A, two in Class 5A, 13 in Class 6A and 11 live-stream broadcasts in Class 7A.
Volleyball closes out the regular season with four matches on tap tonight including a Wiregrass headliner, Providence Christian at Enterprise. Area play begins Monday with Hartselle already lined up to live-stream the action in Class 6A, Area 14. Several AHSAA schools in the NFHS member school broadcast program are expected to sign up for area tourney play before Monday.
